From the Gospel accounts of Jesus' life, we learn that he very well understood the difficulties of the poor and was very sensitive to their needs. Although he lived in heaven, Jesus gave up his spiritual body, took up a human body and "became poor for our sake" (2 Corinthians 8: 9). When he saw the multitudes of people, "he was compassionate for them, because they were skinned and thrown to and fro like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36). The account of the poor widow is proof that Jesus was impressed not by the consistent gifts of the rich, who were giving "out of their surplus", but by the little donation of the widow. Her gesture touched her heart because "from her poverty, she threw away all the means of existence that she had." - Luke 21: 4.
